Not That Kind Of Troll Bridge

(Trolls are on my mind for some reason, lately. Also, I am playing with more microfiction here and at www.patreon.com/thatjeffmach.)

Once there was a bridge which guarded a Troll.

The Bridge did not ever mention this to the Troll. Had the Troll many friends, he might have found that most bridges do not talk to the Troll before they get to the middle.

But he was too shy a troll.

So as travelers approached, the Bridge assessed them. Brave adventurers to be bribed? Official messengers to be let through with haste? Troublemakers to be turned away? “I’m awfully sorry, but Troll has Blue Fever. It’s annoying in trolls, deadly in Humans. Come back another day.

The Bridge loved the Troll. They had many long talks, in the late nights.

Did the Bridge guard the Troll for the Troll, or the Bridge?

Neither would ever know.
